By the mid-1930s, after 15 years in power, Mussolini remained dissatisfied with his accomplishments. Becoming more and more radical, he was consumed by a singular obsession: transforming Italians into “new men” and Italy into a warrior nation. In 1938, having already defeated the left in the 1920s and the Ethiopians in the mid-1930s, he identified a new enemy: the Jews. Aligning himself with Hitler, who he believed would help him establish a new empire along the shores of the Mediterranean, Mussolini found Italy less willing to side with him.
