Even today, they are essential to life on Earth and are at the start of the food chain on which all human beings ultimately depend.
But the number of insects around the world is decreasing, creating a breakdown in the food chain. Environmentalists and scientists are now extremely worried. Professor of landscape ecology Alexandra-Maria Klein from Freiburg, for example, has been studying the effects of human interventions on the natural environment for decades and launched an experiment on a fruit plantation on the shores of Lake Constance: what is happening when the insects disappear?
