Of the many gangsters who operated during the Prohibition era, Alphonse "Al" Capone (also nicknamed "Scarface", whom he hated) was arguably the most famous and feared of all. The undisputed leader of the Chicago Outfit, he used Chicago's corruption and ruthlessness to turn the Outfit into one of the most powerful (and violent) criminal organizations in the Midwest.

Virtually untouchable thanks to corrupt Chicago authorities, it was only after the Valentine's Day Massacre of 1929 that the violence of its operations proved too difficult to ignore, and the federal government intervened, sparking the downfall by Capone.
