This was an interview with Victor “Vic” Smith, a Vietnam veteran who served with No. 9 Squadron of the RAAF as a door gunner. Although it is a dangerous job, veterans who served as a door gunner were overlooked in many interviews, and we felt it was necessary for everyone who served in
Vietnam so that their story can be told.
Other airfield defense guards like Vic volunteered to work as a door gunner with No. 9 Squadron RAAF, which served in South East Asia from 1966 to 1975 (the end of the war) and worked as medical evacuation (dusting), attack/support and “people”. sniffer' (a special program to detect enemy activity by monitoring the UH-1's aerial components).
The importance of the squadron – such as assisting other forces, working with the SAS (and rescuing them from dangerous situations) and suffering casualties and aircraft losses – should not be underestimated.
We take it upon ourselves to tell the stories of these veterans – they deserve to be heard.
