The details of Major General James Birdseye McPherson's death at the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864 are well known to students of the Civil War. This happens to enemy soldiers, a polite tip of the hat before dashing off on his horse and instant death by gunshot. The origins of this story come from a Confederate soldier. The original letter makes fascinating reading. The same goes for the union side of the story, which has been largely lost to time.
