Sorting the pebbles into correct piles concerned the orthogonality thesis. A consequence of the orthogonality thesis is that powerful artificial intelligence will not necessarily share human values.
This video shows how powerful and dangerous intelligence is. These two findings taken together are worrying.
If humanity doesn't solve the problem of aligning AI with human values, there's a good chance we won't survive the creation of artificial general intelligence. This problem is known as an “Alignment Problem”. Some of you may be familiar with the paperclip scenario: an AGI created to maximize the number of paperclips uses all of Earth's resources, and possibly space, to produce paperclips. Humanity dies early in this process. But, given the current state of research, even a simple goal like “maximize paperclips” is already too difficult to reliably program into an AI. We simply don't know how to reliably direct AIs toward their goals. If tomorrow a paperclip company manages to program a superintelligence, this superintelligence will probably not maximize paperclips. We have no idea what that would do. It would be an extraterrestrial mind pursuing extraterrestrial goals. Knowing this, solving the problem of aligning human values in general, in all their complexity, appears to be a truly daunting task. But we must rise to the challenge, otherwise things could turn out very badly for us.
