Through exceptional works including "The Informers", "The Secret History of Costaguana" and "The Sound of Falling Things", Colombian novelist Juan Gabriel Vásquez has delved into the complex history and present of his country. His work has received several international awards, including the Spanish Premio Alfaguara and the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. The French Ministry of Culture recently made him a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. He also translated several authors from French and English into Spanish, including Joseph Conrad and Victor Hugo. The Barnard International Artists Series was the first discussion in the United States of Vásquez's most recent novel, "The Shape of the Ruins", which was considered by Mario Vargas Llosa to be "one of the great novels of recent years ".
