In 1822, Count von Bothmer shot a stork in Germany. However, the bird had already been impaled by a meter-long wooden spear. The stork was harpooned in Africa and then traveled more than 2,500 km. This astonishing flight turned out to be a key clue in a mystery that has tormented scientists for centuries: the seasonal disappearance of birds.
