Young adult (YA) fiction is a category of fiction written for readers ages 12 to 18.[1][2] Although the genre is aimed at teenagers, about half of YA readers are adults.[3]
The subject matter and genres of YA correlate with the age and experience of the protagonist. The genres available in YA are vast and include most of those found in adult fiction. Common YA-related themes include friendship, first love, relationships, and identity.[4] Stories that focus on the specific challenges of youth are sometimes called problem novels or coming-of-age novels.[5]
Young adult fiction was developed to smooth the transition from children's novels to adult literature.[6]
Since around 2017, issues related to diversity and sensitivity in English-language young adult fiction have become increasingly controversial. Fans frequently criticize authors – including those who are minorities themselves – for “appropriating” or misrepresenting the experiences of minority or disadvantaged groups. Publishers withdrew several planned young adult novels from publication after encountering pushback for these reasons from readers of websites such as Goodreads. Authors have reported harassment, requests to stop writing, and death threats on social media.[15][16][17] To avoid offending readers, publishers are increasingly employing, although with mixed success, "sensitive readers" to screen texts for material that might offend.
Many young adult novels feature coming-of-age stories. These feature adolescents who begin to transform into adults, resolve personal problems and take responsibility for their actions.[21] YA serves many literary purposes. It provides an enjoyable reading experience for young people, emphasizing real-life experiences and issues in a more easily understood way, and describes societal functions.[21]
An analysis of YA novels between 1980 and 2000 revealed seventeen extensive literary themes. The most common were friendship, troubles, romantic and sexual interests, and family life.[22] Other common thematic elements revolve around the evolving nature of the texts. This includes stories about self-identity, life, death, and individuality.[23]
New adult fiction (also known as NA) is a genre typically written for and aimed at young adults between the ages of 18 and 30.[26]
