Time Team S18-E08 Castles and Canons (Mont Orgueil, Jersey)
The team travels to Jersey to investigate the origins of Mont Orgueil Castle: a fortress that symbolizes the link between the Channel Islands and Britain.

The massive castle that dominates the shoreline today is a Tudor structure built on earlier foundations, and it is this first castle, built by King John, that the team is searching for.

Unfortunately, it's all built atop a rock outcropping with the steepest sides the archaeologists have ever encountered, and they have to employ climbers to help them and their equipment climb the steep slopes; This is not a dig for the faint-hearted.

As excavations continue, the shadows of this original castle are uncovered and a story emerges of how Mont Orgueil came to symbolize the special relationship of Jersey and the Channel Islands with the Great Britain and France.

It was fought for, lost, and won back for centuries, but the massive stone walls the team discovered ultimately proved useless against the power of gunpowder.
