Time Team S20-E06 lost the Lakeland Mines
Tony and the team head to the Lake District on an expedition that takes them higher and deeper than they've ever dug before.

They are on the trail of a forgotten element of the national industrial heritage: the Lakes region was once a major source of precious copper.

There are nearly two dozen old mines in these mountains. Some of the tunnels still visible 400 meters above sea level are thought to have been dug 400 years ago, when the valleys were dotted with workshops, scaffolding and water-powered machinery, and home to a brave band of Tudor miners.

But few traces of their presence remain, and no one really knows what this place looked like at the time. Archaeologists know almost nothing about Elizabethan mines.

The team braves rain, wind and dangerously unstable tracks. But the combination of their efforts and some ultra high-tech equipment ultimately takes them to the heart of the old mines.
