Ulrich Boser – The key commandments for "learning to learn" (Keynote Day 2) – LT18 Conference
The key commandments for “learning how to learn” or how to become an expert in just about everything

Ulrich Boser, Senior Fellow – Center for American Progress

For as long as we have had some form of education or training, experts have argued that learning is about being able to memorize and regurgitate information. Indeed, our education system relies largely on recognizing those who are capable of studying facts, engraving them in their memory and repeating them on demand. At work too, we expect people to absorb information and apply it when necessary.

This approach to learning, however, is not suited to the world we live in today and, in his keynote speech, journalist and educational researcher Ulrich Boser demonstrates the vital importance not only of what we learn , but also in the way we learn it.

Ulrich will explore the value of “comprehension checks” and ensuring personal relevance to help people gain expertise much faster and better. It will propose six essential steps to the metacognition of knowing how to learn. His thesis – that being intelligent is not an innate ability, but something that can be learned – will appeal to everyone in the L&D sector.

Richly illustrated with practical examples, Ulrich's talk will spark ideas and generate ideas on how to improve everyday practice in learning and organizational development.
