Learn more about the world behind The Figurine by Victoria Hislop

Of all the ancient arts that capture the imagination, none is more attractive than the Cycladic figurine. An air of mystery swirls around these Bronze Age statuettes, highly sought after by collectors and looters.

When Helena inherits her grandparents' apartment in Athens, she is overwhelmed by memories of the summers she spent there as a child, when Greece was under a brutal military dictatorship. Her distant and cruel grandfather was one of the regime's generals, and while searching the dusty rooms, Helena discovers a multitude of valuable objects and antiques. How could his grandfather amass such a treasure? What human price did we pay for them?

Helena's desire to find answers about her heritage dovetails with a growing curiosity about archaeology, ignited by a summer spent with volunteers digging on an island in the Aegean Sea. Their discoveries fuel his determination to protect the precious fragments recovered from the terracotta and to understand the origins of his grandfather's collection.

Helena's attempt to atone for some of her grandfather's actions sees her struggle with the meaning of the word "home", both in relation to the looted objects of antiquity…and to herself.
