U.S. military involvement continues to intensify – a deeper and deeper involvement that develops in small steps that the American public barely notices. A special forces outpost was established in Nam Dong, about 24 kilometers from the border with Laos. Early in the morning of July 6, 1964, the base was attacked by a large Viet Cong force. Under the leadership of Captain Roger Donlon, the attack of the two battalions was repulsed. Donlon received the first-ever Medal of Honor of the Vietnam War for his actions repelling that attack.
By the end of 1964, 216 American soldiers would be killed.
