Visualizing Abolition with Angela Y. Davis and Gina Dent
Angela Y. Davis and Gina Dent, renowned anti-prison activists, scholars, and educators, for an online conversation on critical issues in the arts, visual culture, and abolition. This is the first in a series of events that challenge what it means to view abolitionism as a vision that challenges the social, economic, and political worldviews promoted by prisons.

For the 2020/21 academic year, the UC Santa Cruz Institute of Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with Professor Dent, Women's Studies, hosted a year-long series of online events featuring artists, activists, academics and others united by their commitment. to the vital struggle for prison abolition. Originally, Visualizing Abolition was planned as an in-person symposium, bringing together artists, lawyers, academics and other thinkers to challenge the dominant ways people view and understand issues of mass incarceration, detention and policing in the United States and beyond. Due to the current pandemic, panels, artist talks, film screenings and other events will now take place online, highlighting with even greater urgency the importance of considering alternatives to current injustices.

Visualizing Abolition events accompany Barring Freedom, a bi-coastal art exhibition featuring American artist Sonya Clark, Dread Scott, Deana Lawson, Chandra McCormick and Keith Calhoun, Sharon Daniel, Sanford Biggers and other artists whose practices creatively confront failure. many people see the racist biases within the criminal justice system or understand the economic and social problems that the system serves to obscure. Barring Freedom will be on display at the San José Museum of Art from October 23 to March 21, 2021. It will be on display at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York from April 28 to July 15, 2021.
