Join Steve Stockton to discuss What Happened to Eric Sears in Joshua Tree National Park?

On July 14, 2004, friends and recent high school graduates from Carlsbad, California, Eric Sears, 17, and Ben Fogelstrom decided to go camping together in Joshua Tree National Park.

The two showed up at their campsite at Jumbo Rocks and were having a great time.

Around noon, investigators believed the two boys had separated.

Search teams were informed that Eric was dehydrated and Ben went to get some water.

Eric stayed behind and huddled under a picnic bench to try to rest in the shade until Ben returned.

When Ben returned, he couldn't find Eric anywhere and panicked.

Other campers came across him, unknowingly how, and brought him to the park office to report Eric missing around 4:40 p.m. the next afternoon.

The search of a 20 square mile area of the park began at 6 p.m. that evening and has continued throughout the day since then. An intensive search and rescue operation was carried out.

Robert Fonda, one of the park's lead trackers, said the searches were difficult because they took place every day in temperatures over 100 degrees and because the terrain varied from very flat to rocky outcrops where the base is perilous.

Researchers found some of Eric's shoe prints and the dogs were able to detect his scent, but there was nothing to help them determine where he was going.

Eric was described as being in excellent physical condition.

Unfortunately, it won't end well as Eric's body was found on July 23.

The cause of death could not be determined during the autopsy because the object was too decomposed at the time.

No obvious trauma was seen on the body.

That's when investigators turned to the one person who was with him that night for answers.

The rest of the story, as told by Ben to the authorities, is strange to say the least…
