What is the sociopathic gaze? Is this really a psychopathic look?
This video answers the question: What is the sociopathic gaze? it's sometimes called the psychopathic gaze, which might actually be a better name. We have heard the sociopathic gaze conjured up by many descriptors: cold, detached, emotionless, lifeless, dead, empty, void, icy, intense, piercing, and penetrating. There are many different adjectives to describe this particular phenomenon. To understand the sociopathic gaze or the psychopathic gaze, we need to understand a little about psychopathy versus sociopathy and how it relates to antisocial personality disorder. Psychopathy has two factors: Factor 1 and Factor 2. With Factor 1 (interpersonal/affective), we see traits such as superficial charm, grandiosity, callousness, emotionless manipulation and fearless dominance, lack of empathy, superficial affect and pathological lying. Factor 2 (social deviance) presents a set of different characteristics: excitement-seeking, parasitic lifestyle, impulsivity, irresponsibility, poor behavior control, and criminal versatility. Factor 2 psychopathy is much closer to the DSM Antisocial Personality Disorder diagnosis than Factor 1 psychopathy. Often when we talk about sociopathy, we are really talking about Factor 2 psychopathy, which is why the look sociopathic is probably better called psychopathic gaze. Many features of Factor 1 psychopathy seem to correspond to this particular type of staring.
