The throughline, according to Anderson, is a single statement that sums up the whole idea of a speech. This is the one thing you want your audience to remember after hearing your speech.
So how do you find your direct line? Start by brainstorming ideas for your speech. Once you have a few potential topics, try to find one that ties them all together. What is the one surprising idea that could change the way your audience perceives the topic?
Once you find your throughline, use it as the basis for every aspect of your speech. Build your introduction around it, use it to structure your argument, and make sure it's front and center when you present your conclusion.
When you try to summarize your entire speech in a single statement, ask yourself if there is anything unexpected about it. Is there something counterintuitive that will make your audience sit up and take notice? If so, this is probably your direct line.
If you can do all of this, then you will be well on your way to giving a speech that will truly stand out from the rest.
