The shrine was built on the land where a mosque stood for centuries.
This was destroyed by Hindu militants in 1992.
During the 2014 elections, Modi campaigned on a promise to build a temple dedicated to the Hindu god Lord Ram, on the very site of the demolished mosque.
With the temple dedication coming just months before national elections, opposition leaders accuse him of exploiting religion to gain political favor.
