The most recent ice age occurred during the Pleistocene Epoch, a period that began about 2.6 million years ago and ended only 11,000 years ago. During this period, the world, and especially the wildlife, was very different.
At the time, much of the continent was buried under the massive Laurentide Ice Sheet, a miles-deep mass of ice that extended as far south as Illinois. Alaska, however, has remained largely glacier-free, due to lack of precipitation. Because sea levels were much lower, it was connected to Asia via a land bridge known as Beringia, which allowed animals, and eventually humans, to cross the two continents.
