Why Everything You've Been Told About Food Is Wrong Tim Spector
It's a bold statement: that (almost) everything you are told about food is wrong. But by the end of today's conversation, I think you'll question what you previously thought was true and embark on a new way of eating that works for you.

My guest, Tim Spector, is Professor of Genetic Epidemiology and Head of Twin Research at King's College London. He is a recognized expert on the gut microbiome whose work has transformed what we know about nutrition and health.

Tim's latest work highlights how little we really know about food. Aside from the consensus that plant foods are good for us, ultra-processed junk food is not, there is very little evidence or expert agreement on anything else. So there is certainly no single, “correct” way to eat.

During our discussion, we touch on calorie counting, artificial sweeteners, the dangers of ultra-processed foods, and how the lack of science allows the food industry to maintain that its products are healthy, simply because it doesn't. They have not been proven to be harmful. We discuss the benefits of fasting and the perception that you have to graze all day. The diet industry perpetuates the myth that if we don't have a snack on hand at all times, we will have low energy, lack concentration and might even pass out! For most of us, the opposite is actually true.

With this in mind, we agree that nutrition must be at the heart of the school curriculum. Our kids can get by at school without mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks. I share Tim's passion that we should teach our children to recognize real and fake foods with the same enthusiasm that we teach them to read and write.

I find the concept of personalized nutrition extremely stimulating. As Tim states in his most recent book, “You are very unlikely to be average.” I've seen this firsthand with my patients, many of whom react completely differently to the same ways of eating. That's why I call my approach "diet agnostic" and, like Tim, I actively encourage you to start experimenting with what, how and when you eat. I hope this conversation inspires you to explore what makes you thrive.
