Textbook sections on Mahatma Gandhi, the Mughal Empire and the theory of evolution are just some of those that the Indian government has removed from school textbooks in 2023.

The recent deletions are not an isolated event. Rewriting history is a major priority of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist party – and its impacts are felt far beyond textbooks.
