Why Israel is in big trouble: John Mearsheimer with Tom Switzer
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on September 29, 2023 that "the Middle East region is calmer today than it has been in two decades." Everything changed on October 7 when Hamas attacked Israel, which, unsurprisingly, invaded Gaza to destroy Hamas.

After more than six months, many believe that Israel is losing its war in Gaza. At the same time, Israel is fighting Hezbollah on its northern border, relations between Jerusalem and Washington are strained and the International Court of Justice has ruled that it is plausible that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

At the same time, the risk of escalation is great in the region, as the fighting between Israel and Iran clearly demonstrates. Indeed, it is possible that the United States, which is already fighting the Houthis, could find itself in a war with Iran, something neither country wants.

What could be the lasting consequences of these conflicts? Who will emerge the weakest and who will be the strongest? And what does this crisis mean for American foreign policy in the region, in Ukraine and in East Asia?

As part of our Greater Middle East debate series, Bret Stephens will take a very different stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on June 18 in Sydney and June 20 in Melbourne. Get your tickets: https://www.cis.org.au/event/bret-stephens-2024/
