Why this combat navy turned against the Vietnam War
After studying for several years at the University of Oregon, Howard Boyte entered the Marine Corp in 1968 and was deployed to Vietnam as Mortar 0341. While leading an advance with the E 2/5, Boyte was injured by an NVA trap and evacuated. He would recover, rejoin the company and spend the next 13 months in the country. Upon returning to Oregon, he attended Portland State University and earned a bachelor's degree in history, before beginning a 26-year career with Portland Fire and Rescue.
