Why we need to find common ground to save democracy Professor Keith Magee TEDxLondon
“I believe in you, just as you are,” begins Professor Keith Magee in this lecture on society, polarization and democracy. With warmth, welcome and humor, Keith explains why he believes that despite our differences, it is possible for us all to find common ground. He believes that democracy only works if we can come together, disagree while finding consistent empathy with one another. But in an age of tribalism and increasing polarization, it's difficult to act with empathy and compassion, and it's a skill we need to practice. With democracy under threat more than ever, Keith argues it's time to stop waiting for politicians to help unify us. Instead, it invites us to use empathy and courage to build relationships and common ground with those with whom you disagree. Keith is a public intellectual whose career spans more than three decades in the areas of public policy,
business and public theology all lead to social justice. He holds academic positions at UCL and the University of Newcastle and was a senior advisor on religious affairs to the Obama for America and Biden-Harris campaigns. Keith is also Chairman of the Guardian Foundation, Commissioner for Public Realm Diversity for London Mayor Sadiq Khan, Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Endowment Committee and serves on the US-UK Fulbright Commission. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
