Sarah Bessey, on “Wilderness”; /"At the time, I was in the early stages of what people today would call 'deconstruction,' but back then? I had no such language/". Since then, she has spent a lot of time in nature, she continues. “This big sky and this big space have become a second home for me, even when I feel alone. It was here that I discovered that wilderness is not a problem to be solved, it is another altar of intimacy with God.

So to our breathing. Take this moment to pause and slow down. Slow down, notice where you are… notice what’s around you. In all of this, God is present. Here Now. The presence of God sanctifies this ordinary place and makes it holy.

By Tony Jones: The God of the wild places honors places. When we visit and revisit wild places that are dear to us, experiences of transcendence await us there… I sang a hymn to my most special place, a few hectares of northern forest by a lake. Caring for this earth is a joy and a privilege, and it has become clear to me that this is part of my vocation, my calling from God.

The God of the wild places has given us companions. We may be traveling through space… but we are not alone. We are interdependent on a whole web of creation, woven with sentient and non-sentient beings, animate and inanimate…. I stopped looking to the sky for help and instead looked down at the companions around me.

In Sarah Bessey's book, there are chapters on the cultivation of hope; practice wonder; make room for laments and find good teachers. The idea of offering spiritual practices appeals to her, “because it implies that I haven’t yet understood everything, that we all still practice,” she says.

That faith now evolves seems entirely natural. “I think there’s this sense of normalcy. There's a sense that it's actually a very healthy part of spiritual formation, part of our development. And I often think that if we get to the end of our lives thinking the same things we thought at 20, then we're missing out on a lot of invitations from the Holy Spirit.
