You think badly about the exhibition

Exposition, or background information about characters and setting, is difficult to balance: too much, and your novel can read like a textbook, but too little and your story can be vague and unfounded. As a developmental book editor, I frequently discuss exposition with the authors I work with because it is essential to include and nail a story. To help you approach exposing your own stories, here are some do's and don'ts to keep in mind as you write and edit your novel.

01:23 – Do: clarify when and where the story takes place
02:48 – Don’t: Info dump from the start
04:13 – Do: Integrate contextual information as soon as it becomes relevant
05:20 – Don’t: include unnecessary details
06:37 – Do: illuminate the story and motivations of the protagonist
07:42 – Don’t: Overshadow the main story
